London kids needed

Posted by chrislintott in Uncategorized

From the BAA

The BBC-2 Culture Show have just contacted the BAA to ask us to help
with a proposed dark-sky observing project in Norfolk. In particular they
would like to get in touch with young people in the 14-16 age range who live
in the Greater London region and invite them to a star party being held at
Kelling Heath, Norfolk on Friday, April 13 - Sunday, April 15 (see www.starparty.org). They are looking for 6-12 youngsters plus a few adults to help. They would arrange transport, and a pre-meeting in London is
also anticipated. The venture would depend on there being a clear sky
available over the weekend in question.

The idea behind this is to enable schoolchildren studying for GCSE or
similar, who live in badly light-polluted parts of London to get the
chance to see a really dark sky with its associated celestial splendours. It
would be filmed as one of the items for the Culture Show, which is broadcast
on Saturdays around 7pm.

If you are in this age group and are interested, or are a parent of a
child interested in Astronomy and who would like to be involved in the
programme, then please send an e-mail to me with some details so that we can
collate the response and forward this to the BBC. My e-mail address is:

president@britastro.org

Time is short and so, if you can help, do please treat this request as
a matter of urgency - thank you,

Richard Miles

Blowing our own trumpet

I’ve just seen that Bang! has been selected as part of the longlist for the Royal Society book prize. I’m ridiculously pleased about this, so couldn’t resist mentioning it.

Just seen it.

I don’t know if this is general knowledge, but Patrick and I aren’t the people with the last word on the programme. It gets whisked into editing, from whence it emerges usually hugely improved. I was therefore *slightly* nervous about what tonight had in store, but as it turns out I needn’t have worried. Everyone did an excellent job (although I might need to have a word about one or two graphics!) and I feel we did the Sky at Night proud. I hope you did too. If you haven’t seen it, tomorrow night on BBC4 is your next chance.
