It’s all happening at the (Galaxy) Zoo

I do believe it’s true…Galaxy Zoo will be going live in less than a week. We need your help to sort through the million or so galaxies imaged by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. No experience is required, and you get to be literally the first person to set eyes on part sof the Universe which surrounds us. If you sign up now you might just get a sneak preview.
Update: The Galaxy Zoo is now open for business. No giraffes, though.

I just wanted to put up a little tip for anyone like me who loses their sense of direction as soon as they’re asked about it . . .
The clockwise/anticlockwise thing. I spent ages trying to draw diagrams and work it out for every single spiral. Then I got used to the fact that the arms trail along behind, like the silvery bits in a whirlpool, so I just visualised each galaxy as a whirlpool and made little circular motions with my finger. Must have looked a right freak in the 24-hour computer room but it worked a treat!
You’re a menace, Chris and all you other zookeepers, putting up something so pretty and relaxing and addictive a week before my exams start . . . are there any Norwegian Blues?

Best way for the clockwise/anti-clockwise thing is start at the TIP of a galaxy trail and move INWARD towards the center. You will get it right every time. AA

Heard about galaxyzoo on the Today Programme this morning. It would be so exciting for an ordinary Joe to be part of this project. I tried and tried again to connect but the zoo was closed. Maybe tomorrow - or midnight tonight.

Sorry guys for it falling over, I went over to http://www.bautforum.com (Bad Astronomy and Universe Today) and told everyone there. Phil Plait has done a blog on it as well (http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2007/07/11/discover-new-galaxies) so that helped drive the traffic.
Have not had time to have a go myself due to pressure of time from other things.
