I know I promised you a Mercury post. I’ve been distracted by this thing, discovered by one of the Galaxy Zoo users, Hanny.

The question is – what is it? We’re applying to use the VLA to find out, and the deadline’s tonight.

Stuart says…. you need to fix your link to Phil Plait’s blog as it currently points at bandastronomy.com. Good luck with the VLA proposal.

Also..there was something similar in the old series I think, rather than TNG.

That looks weird. Do you have any idea what it is? Any ideas at all? Very interesting.

      :D

Hanny says: maybe a nice idea for a t-shirt ;)

I can’t help noticing that in the enhanced image the Voorwerp appears to be inclined in the same plane as the nearby galaxy; the “hole” also appears aligned to the centre of the galaxy. I’m wondering if this is just a coincidence, or is there a direct physical relationship between these objects.
P.S. Any word on the VLA application?

Well, we hit the deadline. It’ll take a month or two for them to get back to us.

And no, we don’t know yet if it’s a coincidence whether it’s aligned or not.
