Not that I've anything against CERN, obviously. ;-) But I did notice a lot of commentary that if you want to learn anything in the UK these days, you'd better quit astronomy and go there.

You want rock?

Will this do?

All suggestions for improvement and any comments on the accuracy gratefully received - I don't want to be put in a white coat myself . . .

With thanks to Dr Brian May and Queen.

It's a complex thing, to see complex stars,
From radio waves, its signals came
In Cheshire's soil remain
It gave us new pictures
And Chris walked up its dish
But the government merged funds
Among our sciences, yeah . . .

Jodrell, Jodrell,
Don't they see the light above their funded skies?
Jodrell, Jodrell,
They'll take away the sight to blind our eager eyes
STFC, where we gonna hide to discover more?

Oh, the powers know money
Call projects “sunset” or “sunrise”
On the new ones they swore
Fights for old ones starve more . . .
Leave e-Merlin to fate
Leave our science at stake
But in every war's name
Say a prayer and spare nothing . . .

Jodrell, Jodrell,
Our telescope was loved and our sights were bright
Jodrell, Jodrell,
Tracked Sputnik 1, starburst and more
Jodrell, Jodrell
Don't you want to see the galaxies?

What is left of your money?
Just the science at CERN
A quantum new age
In which we no longer learn.
