I initiated a discussion on one of the Galaxy Zoo threads, some time back, regarding this apparent mismatch between science vs lay speak – and the pitfalls that await because of it.
One example being evolution ‘theory’ – From experience I know that many non-science literate people I’ve talked to define the word to mean ‘a vague idea’ as in ‘I have a theory about that, but….’ and this misunderstanding is often exploited by religious ‘leaders’ in order to bolster ID’ism…
